When the Anchorage Housing Authority approached Bittner Plumbing and Heating to upgrade the heat and hot water for their 44 unit apartment building, they wanted a system that would be efficient and reliable. Paul Bittner of Bittner Plumbing and Heating worked with Mark Herrington at Heating and Ventilation sales to design in a Triangle Tube Prestige Cascade boiler system with Smart Indirect Water heaters to do the job.
The 44 units are heated with baseboard radiation and the hot water for all units is provided by the twin 120 gallon Smart tanks. ThePrestige Cascade Condensing Boiler unit is built with three 399 MBH boilers. This provides a highly efficient and effective boiler plant. By combining the three boilers, a turndown of over 10 to 1 is achieved. This helps the plant run efficiently with parallel modulation. With three boilers, the building has the reliability of redundancy in the event of a boiler error or maintenance. The three boilers are vented with a common vent manifold to minimize the vent piping and provide a single vent pipe.
The Smart Indirect Water Heaters are also both highly reliable and efficient. The inner stainless steel tank is designed to expand and contract as the water temperature changes during use. This tank expansion eliminates scale build-up which reduces efficiency and leads to tank failures. The unique tank-in-tank design provides a large surface area for heat transfer which reduces the amount of time required to heat the water. These two Smart units replaced conventional direct fired water heaters. The Smart tanks have 2" of foam insulation completely surrounding the tanks, keeping heat loss down to less than 2 degrees F per hour.
The Housing Authority's decision to upgrade their cast iron boilers and conventional water heaters with Triangle Tube's efficient Prestige and Smart models is saving money every day. As the heating season progresses I will post the savings data.
Challenger Condensing Solo Boiler Provides High Efficiency Heating
The new Challenger Solo Condensing Boiler joins the Challenger Combi Bo
iler in providing high efficiency hydronic heating in a compact package. The Challenger Combi boiler provides both heat and domestic hot water, eliminating the need for a separate water heater. Wall Mounted Boilers Help Protect Against Flood Damage

Unfortunately a flooded basement will require the replacement of a boiler if the flood waters are able to enter the boiler enclosure. This brings into focus another advantage of the Prestige Challenger and Prestige Wall Hung Condensing Boilers. We have heard many accounts from homeowners where, although they had flood water in their basement, the water had not reached the boiler.
The Prestige Condensing Boilers and the Challenger Combination Boilers are designed to be wall mounted. This brings key components to eye level, which enables the boilers to be serviced and checked more easily. The Prestige and Challenger are highly efficiency boilers with AFUEs of 96% and 95% respectively. They are available in natural gas or propane, and are a green choice with low NOx emissions.
The Challenger Combination Boiler can provide up to 3 GPM of hot water, while the Prestige Excellence can provide up to 180 GPH from its internal storage tank. The Prestige Solo models can be combined with a Smart Indirect Water Heater to provide plentiful hot water.
If you are replacing a flood damaged boiler or adding a new boiler, consider the advantages of the wall mounted Prestige or Challenger boilers from Triangle Tube. They could save you time and trouble in the future.
Solar Indirect Water Heater is a Green Choice
There are rapid advances in the use of the sun's energy that are maki
ng it attractive to a growing number of homeowners. While solar power has been available for decades (even the White House had panels in the 1970's), the activity in this market is reaching a fever pitch. These advances are reducing the costs of installation, which is driving new business, driving new investment, further reducing the costs. That is the power of progress.
One of the best paybacks today in the solar market is solar thermal - using the sun to heat a home's hot water - and even help with some space heating. The concept is actually very simple. Circulate water or glycol through rooftop tubes that heat the water and then transfer that heat to domestic water. Of course it is more complicated than it sounds and there are a lot of ways to get this done. But the bottom line is that these relatively simple and compact systems can offset much of the energy used to heat the hot water in a home. And this is significant because hot water
heating makes up 25% of household energy costs.
Triangle Tube offers a solar hot water solution for homes with hydronic heating. The Smart Multi-Energy (SME) Indirect Water Heater is designed to integrate solar energy into the complete hydronic system. The SME contains a heat transfer coil that transfers the heat from the solar panels to the hydronic system water that surrounds a domestic water tank. This large volume of water (both hydronic system and domestic) is able to maximize the heat energy from the solar panels.
When the solar panels are not able to meet the demand, the hydronic system provides heat from a boiler. Triangle Tube's Prestige and Challenger natural gas or propane boilers are green choices as their AFUE's are 96% and 95% respectively. They feature low NOx emissions and modulating controls using outdoor reset to minimize their carbon footprint.

Replacing your boiler or water heater? Summer is the best time to install a high efficiency boiler and water heater.
1) Installing a new boiler in the summer allows the installer to do the work without turning off the heat in your house. Both you and the installer will be happy about that !
2) Heating oil has reached record levels and shows no sign of a significant change. Many people are "planning ahead" by locking in relatively low rates over the summer months. If you can switch to natural gas you can lock in the low rates permanently.
3) Natural gas at $1.25 per therm is less than half the cost of heating oil at $3.70 per gallon. If you can switch from oil to natural gas you will cut your heating bills in half - before you even consider the higher efficiency of today's boilers.
4) By acting now you will be able to have contractors focus on delivering the best hydronic heating system design for your needs. Without the rush of emergency repairs, contractors have the time and desire to focus on your installation.

5) By doing your research now you will be able to select the best products for your home. You may consider installing radiant floor heating to replace a furnace or baseboard. Radiant floor heating can be installed in many existing homes without replacing the existing wood, tile, or carpeted floors. Working over the summer time gives you the time to make an educated decision and gives the contractor the time to get the job done before the first
frost. As you are doing your research, be sure to consider selecting products that best fit your needs. Triangle Tube offers two lines of natural gas or propane high efficiency condensing boilers.

Water Heater Comparisons: Indirect Water Heaters and Instantaneous Water Heaters

Instantaneous Water Heaters
Instantaneous Water Heaters are a relatively new product in the market. These water heaters heat domestic hot water only on demand, eliminating the storage tank and stored water volume. Eliminating the storage tank also eliminates the standby heat loss from the stored water. This energy efficiency has created interest as the energy costs have risen over the last few years. While most people measure traditional water heaters by their storage volume (somewhat incorrectly), instantaneous water heaters are measured by their maximum flow rates. These flow rates are important as they will determine how much water can be used at one time. Instantaneous water heaters are promoted by saying that you will never run out of hot water, which is meant to deal with the fact that traditional water heaters, with their slow recovery rates, will run out of hot water. Instantaneous water heaters will continue to produce hot water as long as requested, but you can get cold water from the shower if you use too much at one time. Instantaneous water heaters have an estimated life of 15 to 20 years - however regular maintenance is required. Scale will accumulate on the heat exchanger that must be removed periodically.
Indirect Water Heaters
Indirect Water Heaters are a perfect option for homes with existing boilers. Because they utilize the boiler as their heat source, they have the simplest configuration. Boiler system water is used to heat the domestic water. Most indirect water heaters pump the boiler system water through a coil in the domestic hot water storage tank. The heat is then transferred from the coil to the domestic water. The Smart Indirect Water Heater uses a unique tank-in-tank design that surrounds the entire domestic water tank with hot boiler system water. This results in a very high heat transfer rate and therefore a very fast recovery rate. Therefore a 40 gallon Smart water heater will supply more hot water than a 40 gallon traditional gas water heater. In fact the recovery rate of the Smart is twice as fast as a traditional gas water heater and four times as fast as an electric water heater. When combined with a high efficiency boiler such as Triangle Tube's Prestige Solo boiler, indirect water heaters are very energy efficient. They do not have the flue or chimney that is in a traditional gas boiler therefore their standby losses can be minimized Triangle Tube's Smart Indirect Water Heater is surrounded by 2 inches of expanded foam, and minimizes the heat loss to 1/2 degree F per hour. This translate to a cost of $0.05 per day to maintain 40 gallons at temperature with natural gas.
Coil-in-tank indirect water heaters will accumulate scale on the hot coils in the tank. As this scale accumulates the efficiency of the tank decreases and the recovery rate gets longer. The Smart Indirect Water Heater surrounds the domestic tank with hot boiler water, minimizing scale formation. As fresh cold domestic water enters the tank, the inner tank is designed to expand and contract, dislodging any scale. Therefore the tank will retain its high efficiency throughout its life. And speaking of life, the Smart Indirect Water Heater comes with a limited Lifetime Warranty for residential installations. So the Smart Indirect Water Heater will be the last water heater you ever buy.
Conclusion
Indirect Water Heaters are among the most efficient ways to produce domestic hot water. It is important when considering any water heater that you look not only at the storage tank volume, but more importantly in how much water the tank can deliver. Due to the unique tank-in-tank design, the Smart Indirect Water Heater is among the most reliable, most efficient, and most desirable water heaters you can select.
Water Heater Comparisons are about more than Gallons of Storage
Traditional electric water heaters feature electric elements that heat the water. These are simple to install and have a low purchase price. Unfortunately in most of the country, where electric rates are $0.15 or higher per kilowatt-hour, they have one of the highest operating costs. Electric water heaters also have the lowest recovery rates. Recovery rates are the amount of time it takes to bring water up to the desired storage temperature. To compensate for these low recovery rates, electric water heaters need to store more water. Therefore most homes require at least 40 gallons of stored water to meet their demands. Minerals in water will gather at the hottest points in a water heater. Therefore electric water heater elements, which provide the heat to the water, get coated with these minerals over time
. This causes 3 problems. First, it reduces the efficiency of the elements since the minerals act like an insulator, preventing the heat from transferring to the water. Second, since they are preventing heat transfer, the mineral deposits lengthen the recovery time. Therefore, over time the recovery rate will decrease. Third, when the elements can't transfer their heat to the water, they become hotter. This increased heat acts to destroy the elements and eventually they will burn out and need to be replaced.Traditional gas water heaters use natural gas or propane to heat water. The water heaters operate much like a pot of water on a stove. These water heaters have a chimney, or flue that takes the burned gases to the outside. As the gas travels up the flue it continues to heat the water. Unfortunately this flue also creates a lot of heat loss since it is uninsulated. As a result traditional gas water heaters have the highest standby heat losses. The high temperatures of the burning fuel provides a recovery rate that is twice as high as an electric water heater. As a result, a traditional gas water heater requires less stored water to meet hot water demands. The minerals in the gas water heater will collect at the bottom of the heater near the combustion. Over time this lowers the recovery rate and decreases the efficiency of the unit. Eventually these deposits can cause leaks and the failure of the water heater.
In the next post we will discuss instantaneous water heaters and indirect water heaters. There are two types of indirect water heaters. Coil-in-tank varieties, and the unique stainless steel Tank-in-Tank variety known as the Smart water heater from Triangle Tube. Indirect water heaters work with boilers in home with radiant heating.
Heating Oil Price jump makes High Efficiency Boilers even more attractive
if you are relying on it for heat and hot water, you may have another opinion. The attached chart from the US Energy Information Administration documents the 50% increase in heating oil futures in 2011. While you may have locked in your oil rates for the heating season, now is the time to consider your alternatives for your heating system this fall. There are many advantages to the natural gas boilers and indirect water heaters from Triangle Tube. Because natural gas burns cleaner than fuel oil, it is not only good for the environment with its low NOx emissions, but it also greatly reduces the ongoing service costs. And homegrown natural gas is abundant in North America, giving it much better price stability.

Triangle Tube's Prestige and Challenger condensing boilers achieve AFUE ratings of 95% or greater, putting them at the top of the market. The boilers use modulation to further improve their efficiency compared to older boilers (click here to read more about modulation). This is especially helpful in the spring and fall (the majority of the heating season) as it allows the boiler to run longer at lower firing rates, increasing efficiency. The SMART indirect water heaters team up with the Prestige to provide plentiful hot water at a maximum efficiency. The unique stainless steel tank-in-tank design quickly heats the water while the 2 inch foam insulation reduces standby heat loss to a nickle a day. Instantaneous water heaters can't match the lifetime warranty on the Smart water heaters, making them the Smart choice for your home and wallet.
Prepare for the fall heating season now. Eliminate the volatility of the heating oil market with a new natural gas boiler. Contact Triangle Tube today for more information.
Radiant Floor Heating - Warm from the Ground Up
It is safe to say that most people do not give much consideration to the type of heating system when they are considering a house purchase. But people who have experienced the benefits of radiant floor heating are certain to have this on their list.
Radiant floor heating's growth is one of the most positive trends in the HVAC industry in recent years. These systems have the unique feature of being energy efficient, comfortable, invisible, and silent. In nearly every aspect they are a clear winner.
Radiant floor heating systems are a modern alternative to the traditional cast iron radiators or the more recent hot water baseboard systems. In a radiant floor system water (or glycol in some cases) is heated by a boiler and circulated through tubing that is installed under the floor. This water warms the flooring and the heat then radiates throughout the home.
There are many benefits to this process. First, it is extremely energy efficient as the warmest part of the room is the floor, which is the part of the room people use. A hot air furnace heats the air which enters the room through registers on the floor, but then quickly rises to the ceiling, making it the warmest part of the room. In comparison, a room heated by radiant flooring can be kept at a lower overall temperature yet feel warmer than a room heated by hot air.
Second, the system is invisible and silent. The tubing is under the floor and out of the way. There is no sound of air moving through ducts. Third the system contributes to a healthy home by minimizing dust and keeping the room at a more comfortable humidity level. Fourth, the system is multi-functional. A well designed hydronic heating system can heat your home, hot water, swimming pool, and even melt the snow on your driveway or walkway.
Triangle Tube is an industry leading provider of hydronic heating equipment. The Prestige boilers lead the market with a high efficiency, reliable heat exchanger and use either natural gas or propane. The Smart indirect water heaters heat water twice as fast as a traditional gas fired water heater and feature a unique stainless steel tank-in-tank design backed by a limited lifetime warranty. Maxi Flo pool and spa heat exchangers enable you to use your high efficiency boiler to extend your swimming season.
Consider upgrading your home with Radiant Floor Heating. There's no need to move to install radiant floor heating. A certified contractor can replace your hot air system with a radiant system in many cases without disturbing the existing flooring. Contact Triangle Tube to find a certified contractor in your area today.
Indirect Water Heater stores 40 gallons of Hot Water for $0.05 per day
Hydronic heating is the most energy efficient and comfortable way to heat your home. Hydronic heating uses a boiler like the Prestige modulating boiler to heat hot water that passes through baseboard, in-floor, or traditional radiators. One of the other benefits of a hydronic heating system is the ability to use an indirect water heater, which is more energy efficient, more reliable, and more productive than traditional gas or electric water heaters.
One of the benefits of the Smart Indirect Water Heater is that it is completely surrounded by insulation, unlike traditional gas water heaters that have an uninsulated and drafty flue pipe through their center. By using 2 inches of foam insulation a Smart indirect water heater is so well insulated that the standby heat loss is only $0.05 per day !

A nickel a day is a small price to keep 40 gallons of hot water ready for use (based on natural gas at $1.25/therm). Many people are considering installing instantaneous water heaters to avoid paying for standby heat loss. But in their quest to be green, they are having to wait for the hot water to respond, and also are limited in the amount of water they can withdraw at one time. In addition, the installation and maintenance costs may outweigh any cost savings possible.
In contrast, the Smart water heaters provide instant hot water response to as many demands as needed until the tank is depleted. But even then, the unique design of the Smart tank reheats water at an industry leading pace. Designed to eliminate energy robbing limescale, the Smart keeps performing efficiently throughout its life - which is a long one that is guaranteed by a limited lifetime warranty.
Take full advantage of your hydronic heating system and make a comparison between the Smart tank and any other tank type or instantaneous water heater. When you add up all of the benefits to a Smart Indirect Water Heater, you will see that selecting it truly is the Smart choice.
Solar Water Heater Tax Credits Remain at 30% for 2011
Solar Thermal systems provide one of the quickest paybacks in the renewable energy market. In a solar thermal system, liquid, usually glycol, is pumped through tubes in panels that are usually installed on a rooftop. The solar panels absorb the sun's energy and transfer it to the liquid, which then transfers the heat energy to a storage tank.
The most common usage for solar thermal systems is to heat domestic hot water. For households with hydronic heating, Triangle Tube's Smart Multi Energy (SME) Indirect Water Heaters are an excellent way to do this. The heat energy from the solar panels is transfered to the boiler system water as the glycol passes through a coil in the outer tank of the water heater. This heat is then transferred to the domestic hot water. The Smart SME water heater's high water content provides the potential to store a large amount of thermal energy during peak heating hours. The SME is designed with 10 ports that can connect to other heat sources such as ground source heat pumps or oil, gas, or propane boilers. In addition, when the SME is connected to a radiant heating system, the solar panels will provide space heating.
Contact Triangle Tube to learn more about how the Smart Multi Energy water heater can become a key part in your solar thermal system. Take advantage of the 30% federal tax incentive and save some money while going green.
Combination Boilers - Heat and Hot Water from One Appliance
Combination boilers are a popular option for many households, especially where there is limited space for heating equipment. Combination boilers are so named because they are a combination of a boiler and a water heater. This is a relatively new term even though boilers have long been used to provide hot water directly from the boiler.
Traditional cast iron boilers often used a hot water coil that was inserted into the water reservoir in the boiler. Domestic hot water was heated as the water passed through the hot water coil. Triangle Tube had been a significant supplier of these inserts for over 60 years.
Today's high efficiency boilers are designed with much lower water content than traditional boilers which eliminates the space for a hot water coil. Instead, most high efficiency boilers are paired with a seperate indirect water heater such as Triangle Tube's Smart Series. These water heaters provide hot domestic water by circulating boiler system water around the domestic water.
Many homeowners desire to produce both space heating and domestic water heating from the same appliance. The product that does this is a Combination Boiler, such as Triangle Tube's Prestige Excellence model. Most combination boilers on the market today utilize a small heat exchanger built into the boiler to produce domestic hot water. These boilers do not store hot water and are designed for homes where domestic hot water use is limited.
The Prestige Excellence combination boiler is unique in that it contains a 14 gallon hot water tank that provides fast and reliable hot water. The unique tank-in-tank design rapidly heats incoming water to ensure a continuous flow of up to 180 gallons of hot water per hour. Unlike instantaneous water heaters, the Prestige Excellence can provide immediate hot water from its integrated tank.
The Prestige Excellence is the perfect solution for homeowners looking for a high efficiency boiler, with an AFUE of 95%, with plentiful hot water in a compact, reliable appliance. The Prestige Excellence uses natural gas or propane and works with residential radiant heating systems.
High Efficiency Boiler Basics - The Benefits of Modulation
Modulation is the term used to describe the ability of a boiler to fire at varying rates. If you think of a gas stove, modulation is your ability to control the burner's heat output - anywhere from "warm" to "full boil".
Traditional boilers do not have the ability to modulate. They are either at "full boil" or they are off. Now, think how efficient it would be to cook your dinner with this type of control. You would be constantly turning the stove on and off, trying to maintain the right temperature. If you consider that boilers are inefficient during the start-up periods and are actually least efficient at "full boil" otherwise known as "high-fire", you will quickly realize that this is not the best way to run a boiler.
Modern controls such as those in Prestige boilers, use a variety of sensors to monitor the boiler system and adjust (modulate) the output of the boiler to meet the heating needs of the home. This modulation allows the boiler to run longer (fewer on and off cycles) at lower fire rates (for improved efficiency) while still maintaining the desired temperature in the
home. Modulation is effective in residential radiant heating applications. This is especially true in modern radiant floor heating, where the system temperatures are lower. Triangle Tube's Prestige Solo boilers utilize modern features such as modulation, outdoor reset, low NOx burners, and a unique stainless steel heat exchanger to deliver outstanding efficiency with an AFUE rating of 95%. The Prestige Excellence combination boiler provides both heat and up to 180 gallons per hour of hot water from within the boiler, eliminating the need for a seperate domestic hot water tank.
If a seperate hot water heater is desired, Triangle Tube's Smart Indirect Water Heaters are the perfect companion to the Prestige Solo. With a unique stainless steel tank-in-tank design, the Smart indirect water heaters heat water quickly, with standby heat loss costs as little as $0.05 per day. With a limited LIFETIME residential warranty, the Smart indirect water heaters are a sound investment. How limescale ruins common water heaters
Over time this build-up acts as an insulator, causing the water heater to work harder and harder to heat the water. This reduces the energy efficiency of the water heater by up to 50%. The water heater will eventually fail due to this excessive heat. Coil-type indirect fired water heaters provide a longer service life, however limescale does accumulate on their coils decreasing efficiency and eventually leading to failure.

In comparison, Triangle Tube's Smart Indirect Fired Water Heaters practically eliminate limescale build-up and failure due to the unique tank-in-tank design. In the Smart water heater design, a stainless steel inner tank containing the domestic hot water is surrounded by boiler system water in an outer tank. The boiler system water heats the entire surface of the inner tank, eliminating areas of heat concentration. In addition, the stainless steel inner tank is allowed to expand and contract slightly as cold water enters the tank. This movement dislodges any limescale that does accumulate and allows it to pass through the system.
The Smart indirect fired water heater is available for use with traditional boiler systems while the is designed to work as an integral part of a green solar water heater system. Triangle Tube's Smart indirect water heaters can be paired with the Prestige boiler for optimum system efficiency.
Smart Indirect Water Heaters – The Efficiency Leaders
Energy Efficiency is important to everyone these days. Whether you are striving to save money, or are simply looking to minimize your carbon footprint, green products have a bigger following than ever. Heating the hot water consumes up to 25% of the energy use in your home, so it is important to look at your water heater efficiency to minimize your energy consumption.
Many people are considering combination or instantaneous water heaters to reduce their energy costs. Instantaneous water heaters heat hot water directly, eliminating the storage tank, and therefore eliminating the standby heat loss that occurs while the hot water is not used. This is a good solution, especially if your house has only one or at most two showers. If you have a larger family with more extensive hot water needs, a Smart Indirect Fired Water Heater may be more appropriate.
Triangle Tube's Smart Indirect Water Heaters work with homes that have an existing boiler. These water heaters use the boiler system to heat the hot water through a unique tank-in-tank system. The large surface area of the inner tank allows for rapid heat transfer, allowing for a small tank to replace much larger traditional water heaters.
But the most important factors in the Smart’s energy efficiency are its insulating jacket and the boiler efficiency. When a SMART tank is paired with a high efficiency boiler,, like Triangle Tube's Prestige boiler it can heat the water using nearly 25% less energy than a gas water heater. In addition, the Smart tanks are surrounded by 2 inches of foam, which limits heat loss to less than ½ degree F per hour. The result is that standby losses can cost less than $0.05 per day.
With no moving parts, Triangle Tube’s Smart indirect fired water heaters are very reliable. In fact they come with a limited Lifetime residential warranty. The efficiency and reliability of the Smart indirect water heaters make them an excellent choice for today’s green homes.
Hydronic Heating Basics
“It’s hot, but it’s a dry heat,” is something that we often hear about the weather in the Southwest. A dry heat in the summer may be considered a good thing, but in the winter, an increasing number of homeowners are opting for “wet” hydronic heat. Hydronic heating systems use water instead of air as the heat transfer medium.
For decades, millions of homes have been heated by boilers, baseboards, and radiators by water circulated from a central boiler. The result is a silent, clean, and reliable heating system that is energy efficient and hygienic. Without the need to circulate air throughout the house, there are fewer drafts and less dust, while the humidity is maintained at a much more comfortable level.
In addition to radiators and baseboards, radiant floor heating systems have become very popular in recent years. Radiant floor systems circulate hot water through tubes that are attached or embedded under the floor. Radiant floor heating delivers heat where it is most needed, at the coldest part of the room. Hidden underneath the floor, it is invisible and allows the maximum freedom in furniture placement. Radiant floor heating can be used under carpeting, wood floors, tile, or even embedded in concrete slabs.
The heart of the hydronic heating system is the boiler. While traditional boilers were large objects consuming space in the basement, the modern high efficiency boiler is more compact and much more efficient. Modern boilers such as Triangle Tube’s Prestige high efficiency boiler use advanced control technology to maximize their efficiency. Advanced features such as outdoor reset and modulation enable the Prestige to best match its output to the heating needs. And the use of advanced materials allow the modern boilers to maximize the heat extracted from the fuel being used. The Prestige boiler uses a high grade stainless steel heat exchanger to extract heat by condensing the combustion gases, which was not possible in older cast iron boilers resulting in a 10% improvement in efficiency.
Finally, hydronic heating systems can heat not only your home, but your domestic hot water, and even your pool as well. Indirect fired water heaters are recognized as the most energy efficient and reliable domestic water heating options available. Triangle Tube’s Smart indirect fired water heaters lead the group in efficiency with their unique stainless steel tank-in-tank design. And Triangle Tube’s Maxi Flo pool and spa heat exchangers allow you to extend your summer using the efficiency of the Prestige boiler.
Whether in new construction or renovation, today’s hydronic heating systems are leading the way in efficiency. Contact Triangle Tube today to discover the benefits of hydronic heating for yourself.
How to Select a Replacement Water Heater
The Federal Government is now providing tax rebates of up to $1500 to homeowners replacing their existing water heater with a qualified energy efficient model. While most of us wouldn't consider replacing a water heater until it begins leaking, with the incentives set to expire at the end of 2010, it may make sense to make the replacement now, especially if your existing model is long past its warranty period.
When selecting a replacement water heater there are more choices than ever. If your house is heated by a boiler, one of your options is an Indirect fired water heater, where the domestic water is heated by the boiler system. This post will discuss some of the advantages of these water heaters. Some of the important features to consider are Energy Efficiency, Hot Water Production, and Longevity.
Energy Efficiency – In a water heater comparison, Indirect fired water heaters are recognized as the most energy efficient and longest lasting design by the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy. This energy efficiency relates both to the ability of the water heater to retain its heat, and to the efficiency of heating the water. Triangle Tube's Smart indirect fired water heaters are completely surrounded by 2 inches of expanded foam insulation. This provides a blanket so efficient that standby heat loss is minimized to less than ½ degree F per hour – or in dollar terms – less than 5 cents per day.
Traditional gas fired water heaters are much less efficient because they contain an un-insulated flue pipe through the center of the water tank. The tank loses heat through this flue, as well as the surrounding insulated jacket. In addition, gas fired water heaters burn much less efficiently than the Prestige Boiler that would heat a Smart water heater.
Hot Water Production – Nobody wants to be in the shower as the hot water runs out. It is important that your water heater is sized to meet your needs. As your needs change, will the water heater be able to keep up? Triangle Tube's Smart models feature a unique tank-in-tank design that maximizes the heat transfer from the boiler to the domestic hot water. This allows for more hot water output from a smaller tank, which saves money not only on the initial purchase but also on the on-going energy costs.
Other indirect water heaters feature a heating coil which generally has less heating area and is prone to limescale build-up. Over time, this build-up can increase the heating time by over 30%. And traditional gas and electric water heaters can’t compare to the production of the Smart, which produces four times the amount of hot water of an equivalent electric model, and twice the amount of a standard gas model.
Longevity – Who wants to come home from vacation to find a flooded basement from a leaking hot water heater? It is important to consider the reliability of the water heater when making your choice. Traditional electric and gas models are sold by the length of their warranty, generally 3, 6, and sometimes 12 year warranties. With the Smart series, you have the confidence of a lifetime replacement warranty.
With the many water heating options available today, it can be difficult to select one model from another.
