Radiant Snow Melt Keeps Driveway and Patio Snow-Free

Friday, May 11, 2012 by Gerry Clisham

When the snow is falling the last thing you want to think about is shoveling the driveway.  But no matter how nice the falling snow looks, and how much fun it can be, eventually the driveway, sidewalk, steps, and patio need to be cleared.  Today's hydronic heating systems can solve this problem with Radiant Snow Melting.

Radiant Snow Melt systems circulates warm water / glycol solution through flexible tubes just under the surface.  Advanced systems monitor the moisture and temperature and automatically turn on to melt the snow as it falls.  These systems have been used for many years at ski resorts, hospitals and nursing homes where it is critical to keep surfaces clear to minimize falls.

Radiant Living Magazine recently examined a unique snow-melt application in Greenwich, CT. Click here for the entire article (Spring 2012).   Triangle Tube's Prestige 399 condensing boilers were used in this featured application.  The Prestige Condensing, Modulating Boilers will operate at peak efficiency in snow melt applications.  Snow melt systems operate at low temperatures which maximize the efficiency of condensing boilers.

Triangle Tube Condensing Boilers provide for all of your heating needs,  The most common use is for space heating with traditional radiators, baseboard, or radiant floor installations.  Pairing a boiler with a Smart Indirect Water Heater provides efficient domestic hot water.  Snow Melt and Pool Heating are perfect for the condensing boilers as they operate at maximum efficiency.

Condensing Boilers Maximize Savings from this Warm Winter !

Tuesday, March 6, 2012 by Gerry Clisham

The unusually warm winter in North America has cut everyone's heating costs this year - but the biggest winners by far are homeowners heating with high efficiency condensing hydronic heating systems.  The two features of condensing boilers that contribute to these large savings are Modulation and Outdoor Reset.

Modulation is the process that increases or decreases the heat output, or firing rate, of the boiler.  Just like your kitchen stove, a modulating boiler can adjust its heat output but it doesn't need a person there to make the adjustment.  The boiler's control monitors the heat absorbed by the house by measuring the temperature of the boiler water as it leaves and as it returns to the boiler.  The larger the temperature difference, the more heat the boiler must add to the water, and the higher the firing rate that the control will create.

Non-modulating boilers operate at full fire all of the time.  This is inefficient for two reasons.  First, the boiler is least efficient at full fire, and most efficient at low fire.  So the longer the boiler can run at low fire, the more efficient it is.  Second, each time the boiler starts and stops it loses efficiency.  Modulating boilers run longer at lower temperatures, minimizing the starts and stops.

Outdoor reset is a simple yet extremely important part of a high efficiency system.  An outdoor sensor tells the boiler's control what the temperature is outside.  The boiler uses this information to adjust the temperature of the water that the boiler supplies to the radiant emitters.  This supply water does not need to be as hot during warm weather as it does during cold weather.  By supplying lower temperature water to the system, the boiler can maximize its efficiency.  Click here for outdoor reset basics.

Triangle Tube provides three models of condensing boilers.  The Prestige models feature a stainless steel fire tube heat exchanger with a full featured TriMax control and are available from 60 to 399 MBH.  The Prestige Excellence provides heat and up to 180 gallons per hour of hot water from its indirect water heater.  The Challenger models are available for both heating only (Solo), and combination heat and hot water (Combi) applications.  Challenger boilers are sized from 85 MBH to 150 MBH.   The Keystone models feature a stainless steel water tube heat exchanger and are available in sizes from 399 to 850 MBH for larger residences and light commercial applications.

Prestige Condensing Boilers Cut Office Fuel Bills 58%

Thursday, March 1, 2012 by Gerry Clisham

O&G Industries, a global construction materials and services company purchased and converted a Torrington, CT post office building into office space.  As part of the conversion, O&G wisely decided to remove a 40 year old, 1 million Btu/hr oil fired boiler.  They called in Stafford Mechanical Services to perform the conversion.

Stafford Mechanical Services focuses on designing and installing energy saving projects. After performing a comprehensive energy audit, they determined that natural gas boilers would provide superior energy cost savings compared to oil fired boilers.  Triangle Tube’s 95% efficient Prestige boilers were the best replacements for the old boiler.  Gary Reviczky, of Stafford Mechanical Services noted, “I selected the Triangle Tube Prestige boilers based on my experience with them.  They have proven to be both easy to install and highly reliable.”

Two Prestige Solo 399 boilers, with a total input of nearly 800,000 Btu/hr. replaced the old 1 million Btu/hr. cast iron boiler.  A Triangle Tube Mini-Mod Control provides for the outdoor reset feature to modulate the system water temperature, while the full parallel modulation maximizes the system’s efficiency by operating the boilers at the minimum possible firing rate.  The Triangle Tube boilers increased the heating system turndown to nearly 8 to 1, which minimized boiler cycling and optimized the efficiency.

Prestige BoilerThe Prestige boilers were vented using PVC piping in the existing 30 foot chimney.   This prevented the need for additional holes in the wall and visible vent piping on the exterior.  The wall mounted Prestige boilers freed up the floor space in the boiler room and allowed the piping to be neatly organized.

The old boiler consumed 4,850 gallons during a normal heating season.  At a price of $3.60 per gallon of heating oil, this would cost $17,460.  During the 2010-11 heating season, O&G’s heating cost with the Triangle Tube system was just $7404.  This is a 58% reduction.  The 2010-11 heating season was one of the colder ones in recent memory, so further savings are expected in the future.

Stafford Mechanical Services selected Triangle Tube Prestige boilers helped to convert an old post office to an energy efficient office building.  The building’s owners, O&G Industries will have a more energy efficient workplace for many years to come.

Prestige Condensing Boiler featured at AHR Show

Thursday, January 26, 2012 by Gerry Clisham
Triangle Tube introduced the new Prestige Condensing Boiler with TriMax control was featured at the AHR show in Chicago from 23 to 25 January.  This new boiler attracted a high level of interest from contractors, wholesalers, sales representatives, and competitors.  Once again Triangle Tube has set a new and unique standard for performance, reliability, and ease of use.

Prestige Condensing BoilerThe new Prestige condensing, modulating boiler has been designed to improve the user experience throughout the life of the boiler.  The Prestige uses natural gas or propane to provide hydronic heat or domestic hot water with an indirect water heater.  The electrical wiring has been designed for simplicity, and the heat exchanger has been improved for a 25% reduction in thermal stress.  The venting has been redesigned to be corrosion-proof and the piping locations have been maintained for interchangeability with previous models.

The new TriMax control is the most advanced, yet easiest to use control in the industry.  Two years of development have been focused on one goal - to make the control intuitive to use, thereby making it flow naturally.  For more information, click here.

Prestige Cascade beats Alaskan Cold

Tuesday, December 27, 2011 by Gerry Clisham

Alaska Housing AuthorityWhen the Anchorage Housing Authority approached Bittner Plumbing and Heating to upgrade the heat and hot water for their 44 unit apartment building, they wanted a system that would be efficient and reliable.  Paul Bittner of Bittner Plumbing and Heating worked with Mark Herrington at Heating and Ventilation sales to design in a Triangle Tube Prestige Cascade boiler system with Smart Indirect Water heaters to do the job.

Prestige CascadeThe 44 units are heated with baseboard radiation and the hot water for all units is provided by the twin 120 gallon Smart tanks.  ThePrestige Cascade Condensing Boiler unit is built with three 399 MBH boilers.  This provides a highly efficient and effective boiler plant.  By combining the three boilers, a turndown of over 10 to 1 is achieved.  This helps the plant run efficiently with parallel modulation.  With three boilers, the building has the reliability of redundancy in the event of a boiler error or maintenance.  The three boilers are vented with a common vent manifold to minimize the vent piping and provide a single vent pipe.

Smart Indirect Water HeatersThe Smart Indirect Water Heaters are also both highly reliable and efficient.  The inner stainless steel tank is designed to expand and contract as the water temperature changes during use.  This tank expansion eliminates scale build-up which reduces efficiency and leads to tank failures.  The unique tank-in-tank design provides a large surface area for heat transfer which reduces the amount of time required to heat the water.  These two Smart units replaced conventional direct fired water heaters.  The Smart tanks have 2" of foam insulation completely surrounding the tanks, keeping heat loss down to less than 2 degrees F per hour.

The Housing Authority's decision to upgrade their cast iron boilers and conventional water heaters with Triangle Tube's efficient Prestige and Smart models is saving money every day. As the heating season progresses I will post the savings data.

Challenger Condensing Solo Boiler Provides High Efficiency Heating

Monday, December 19, 2011 by Gerry Clisham

The new Challenger Solo Condensing Boiler joins the Challenger Combi BoChallenger Solo Condensing Boileriler in providing high efficiency hydronic heating in a compact package.  The Challenger Combi boiler provides both heat and domestic hot water, eliminating the need for a separate water heater.  The Challenger Solo boiler provides heat and can provide domestic hot water when paired with an indirect water heater.

The Challenger Solo boiler features a copper tube heat exchanger with an aluminum combustion block.  This unique design is durable and suitable for glycol applications because the system water or glycol flows only in the copper piping.  The aluminum block efficiently transfers the heat from the combustion air and it's light weight makes installation easy.

The Challenger Solo is available in 85, 105, and 125 MBH sizes.  These models are sized to meet the needs of today's homes.  By modulating its output to match the radiant heating needs, the Challenger Solos will operate longer at lower temperatures, which improves efficiency.  These sizes of the Challenger Solo have an AFUE of 95% and operate on either natural gas or propane.

Smart Indirect Water HeaterThe Challenger Solos can provide domestic hot water when paired with a Smart Indirect Water Heater.  The Smart can be sized to fit the needs of the residence, providing the instant hot water response that is expected from traditional tank water heaters, with the efficiency of an instantaneous water heater.

Condensing Boilers and Multi-Zone Homes

Thursday, November 10, 2011 by Gerry Clisham

Most of us don't think about the size of our boiler until we are either cold and the boiler is running or buying a new boiler.  In the first case the boiler is undersized for the house.  When we are buying a new boiler we have the opportunity to avoid buying an undersized boiler.

It is a rare case where a boiler is undersized for a home, and while this prevents a cold house on the coldest days of the year, it also reduces potential efficiency gains.  In most of the year, the full capacity of the boiler is not required, and with low heating loads a boiler will need to cycle on and off to meet the needs.  Modulating boilers reduce this cycling as they can run at a low firing rate.  Traditional boilers operate simply on or off at the highest firing rate.
Challenger Boiler
In a home with multiple zones, a condensing boiler works better than conventional boilers due to its ability to modulate, or adjust its firing rate from full fire to a rate that is only 1/3rd of its full firing rate.  Therefore, when a single zone in a home requires heat, the boiler is able to handle that requirement at firing rate that is better suited for the job.

Triangle Tube's Prestige and Challenger Condensing boilers are designed  to meet the needs of homes with single or multiple zones.  When combined with a Smart Indirect Water Heater they make an energy efficient solution to most hydronic heating needs.

Condensing Boilers eliminate Snow Shovels !

Friday, October 21, 2011 by Gerry Clisham
High Snow With the improvements in PEX tubing and boiler efficiencies, many homeowners and businesses are investing in hydronic snow-melt systems.  These systems are used to heat driveways, walkways, and stairs during snowstorms to keep the paths clear.  Homeowners install these systems to minimize the backbreaking work of shoveling.  Businesses often install these systems to ensure positive footing and minimize injuries from falls.  Steps are especially dangerous areas when coated with ice and snow.  By installing a snow melt system on these steps business owners can be assured of a snow and ice free surface.
Snow Melt
Condensing boilers are the natural choice for snow-melt systems.  Condensing boilers achieve efficiencies of 97% and higher when used in these applications due to the low return temperatures.  With these low temperatures condensing boilers can extract the maximum amount of heat from the flue gas before sending it up the chimney.  Using modulation the boilers can adjust its firing rate to meet the coldest winter day.

Challenger Condensing BoilerThe Triangle Tube Prestige and Challenger boilers are perfect choices for snow-melt applications.  These boilers' efficiency will exceed their already high AFUE ratings of 96% and 95%.  They are compatible with glycol for direct use or they can be combined with Triangle Tube brazed plates to seperate the snow-melt from the other radiant hydronic loops.  Finally the Optima SSM Snow-Melt control can be used to operate the system.

Solar Indirect Water Heater is a Green Choice

Friday, July 29, 2011 by Gerry Clisham

There are rapid advances in the use of the sun's energy that are makiSunng it attractive to a growing number of homeowners.  While solar power has been available for decades (even the White House had panels in the 1970's), the activity in this market is reaching a fever pitch.  These advances are reducing the costs of installation, which is driving new business, driving new investment, further reducing the costs.  That is the power of progress.

One of the best paybacks today in the solar market is solar thermal - using the sun to heat a home's hot water - and even help with some space heating.  The concept is actually very simple.  Circulate water or glycol through rooftop tubes that heat the water and then transfer that heat to domestic water.  Of course it is more complicated than it sounds and there are a lot of ways to get this done.  But the bottom line is that these relatively simple and compact systems can offset much of the energy used to heat the hot water in a home.  And this is significant because hot water Smart Multi-Energy Tankheating makes up 25% of household energy costs.

Triangle Tube offers a solar hot water solution for homes with hydronic heating.  The Smart Multi-Energy (SME) Indirect Water Heater is designed to integrate solar energy into the complete hydronic system.  The  SME contains a heat transfer coil that transfers the heat from the solar panels to the hydronic system water that surrounds a domestic water tank.  This large volume of water (both hydronic system and domestic) is able to maximize the  heat energy from the solar panels.

When the solar panels are not able to meet the demand, the hydronic system provides heat from a boiler.  Triangle Tube's Prestige and Challenger natural gas or propane boilers are green choices as their AFUE's are 96% and 95% respectively.  They feature low NOx emissions and modulating controls using outdoor reset to minimize their carbon footprint.

Is it time to replace your old boiler?

Thursday, July 21, 2011 by Gerry Clisham
One of the common questions we all face is when to replace major appliances; whether it is our refrigerator, washing machine, or even our car.  The boiler certainly fits into that category.  The boiler works throughout the year providing heat and hot water and goes unnoticed much of the time - until a bill for either fuel or repairs arrives.  So when is the right time to replace your boiler?

The answer depends on many factors.  Here are some to consider.
1)  Fuel:  In many areas of the country, and especially in the North East, heating oil is still used in many boilers.   This made sense when oil was abundant and inexpensive and natural gas was not common and relatively expensive.  Today the exact opposite is true.  Heating Oil is now over $3.50 per gallon in most of the US while natural gas is around $1.25 per therm.
At these rates, even if the efficiency of the new boiler is no better than the old, you Prestige Boilerwill save 50% in your energy costs by switching to natural gas.  So, if you have access to natural gas, and you currently heat with oil, this is a big motivator to invest in a new boiler.

2)  Age:  How old is the existing boiler?  As boilers get older, the chance of a major repair is more likely.  If your boiler is more than 20 years old, it is time to at least consider a replacement.  Even if the boiler can last another 20 years, the increased efficiency and reliability will make it worth the investment.

Challenger Boiler3)  Efficiency:  Modern condensing boilers like Triangle Tube's Prestige and Challenger models provide significant efficiency advantages over older models.  The rating plate on the boiler will provide an initial estimate.  Simply take the output divided by the input to find the theoretical efficiency.  The difference between this and 96% for the Prestige and 95% for the Challenger is the theoretical difference in fuel costs.  But modern boilers have features like modulation and outdoor reset that add 5 to 10% more to this efficiency gain.  Click here to learn more about this.Smart Indirect Water Heater

4)  Water Heating - If you are currently using a separate water heater, or a tankless coil in the old boiler, installing a Smart Indirect Water Heater will provide additional energy savings.  With a standby cost of only $0.05 per day, it is the most efficient way to heat your hot water.

5)  Finances - While the new boiler will surely reduce your energy bills, do you want to make the investment at this time?  This is a personal choice for each homeowner.  Rebates and other incentives may sway the decision, but it is important that the overall numbers work for the homeowner.

When you consider all of the factors, find a Triangle Tube contractor to provide a quote for your home.  Investing in Triangle Tube's boilers and indirect water heaters is a sound decision.

The Challenger, Prestige, and Prestige Excellence are efficiency leaders with AFUEs of 95% and above.  All models use natural gas or propane and feature green emissions that meet California's SCAQMD requirements for Low NOx emissions.  All models use modern controls, outdoor reset, and modulation to maximize efficiency.

Triangle Tube's Challenger, Prestige, and Prestige Excellence boilers provide a wide selection of solutions to today's needs for high efficiency boilers.

Heating Oil Price jump makes High Efficiency Boilers even more attractive

Thursday, March 31, 2011 by Gerry Clisham
2011 has started out as a good year for heating oil prices - if you have your own well !  ButHeating Oil Futures are up 50% if you are relying on it for heat and hot water, you may have another opinion.  The attached chart from the US Energy Information Administration documents the 50% increase in heating oil futures in 2011.  While you may have locked in your oil rates for the heating season, now is the time to consider your alternatives for your heating system this fall.

There are many advantages to the natural gas boilers and indirect water heaters from Triangle Tube.  Because natural gas burns cleaner than fuel oil, it is not only good for the environment with its low NOx emissions, but it also greatly reduces the ongoing service costs.  And homegrown natural gas is abundant in North America, giving it much better price stability.
Challenger Combination Boiler
Prestige BoilerTriangle Tube's Prestige and Challenger condensing boilers achieve AFUE ratings of 95% or greater, putting them at the top of the market.  The boilers use modulation to further improve their efficiency compared to older boilers (click here to read more about modulation).  This is especially helpful in the spring and fall (the majority of the heating season) as it allows the boiler to run longer at lower firing rates, increasing efficiency.

The SMART indirect water heaters team up with the Prestige to provide plentiful hot water at a maximum efficiency.  The unique stainless steel tank-in-tank design quickly heats the water while the 2 inch foam insulation reduces standby heat loss to a nickle a day.  Instantaneous water heaters can't match the lifetime warranty on the Smart water heaters, making them the Smart choice for your home and wallet.

Prepare for the fall heating season now.  Eliminate the volatility of the heating oil market with a new natural gas boiler.  Contact Triangle Tube today for more information.

Prestige Excellence Cuts Fuel Bill 58%

Monday, February 28, 2011 by Gerry Clisham
When it was time for J. Bayer to replace his boiler, he researched the market and decided to replace both his boiler and his water heater.  He chose Triangle Tube's Prestige Excellence, a unique combination boiler and water heater.  While he expected positive results, when the fuel bills came in, even he was surprised.

Mr. and Mrs. Bayer chose the Prestige Excellence for several reasons.  They were impressed by the functionality and energy efficiency of the unique Prestige Heat Exchanger with an AFUE of 95%.  The low pressure drop of the condensing heat exchanger also ensures that the pump's electrical usage would be low.  The modulating control and outdoor reset maintain the optimal settings to ensure both warmth and low fuel consumption.

Prestige Excellence Combination BoilerThey were also struck by the fact that the boiler and water heater were combined in one, low maintenance product.  While other combination boilers can provide hot water on demand, the Prestige Excellence's integral storage tank differentiates it from the competition.  The 14 gallon tank-in-tank water heater provides truly instantaneous hot water while the tank-in-tank design quickly generates new hot water, providing up to 180 gallons of hot water per hour.

The numbers truly are impressive.  The Bayers experienced a 58% reduction in their natural gas bills, providing a quick return on their investment.  In these days of volatile prices, now is the time to invest in the fuel efficiency of the Triangle Tube line of boilers and water heaters.

Prestige Excellence - A Unique Combination Boiler

Monday, February 21, 2011 by Gerry Clisham
The Prestige Excellence is a unique product.  The Prestige Excellence fills the space heating role that a boiler most people think of when thinking of boilers.  In fact, it performs this role extremely well with a 95% AFUE efficiency and other features discussed below.  The Prestige Excellence also fills the role of the domestic hot water heater, producing plentiful hot water for the household.

Prestige Excellence Combination BoilerIt is in the domestic hot water mode that the Prestige Excellence sets itself apart.  While other combination boilers can produce both space heating and domestic hot water, most do not have an integrated storage tank.  Most combination boilers do not store hot water;  they produce it instantly much like an instantaneous water heater.  This can have some drawbacks, most noticably a delay in the delivery of the hot water.

The Prestige Excellence contains a fully integrated 14 gallon hot water storage tank.  This enables the Prestige Excellence to supply water with the same response as a traditional storage tank water heater.  The unique tank-in-tank design allows the Excellence to continue to produce hot water at a rate of 180 gallons per hour for the first hour.  This performance has earned praise from homeowners who may have been skeptical at first.

In the boiler role, the Prestige Excellence has the green credentials of low NOx emissions and high efficiency due to its modulating and condensing stainless steel heat exchanger.  This highly efficient and reliable system makes the Prestige Excellence the perfect replacement to older, inefficient boilers.

Providing both space heating and hot water reduces the installation cost and space requirements for the Prestige Excellence.  Contact Triangle Tube to find a certified installer near you.

Is your modulating boiler properly sized?

Monday, January 31, 2011 by Gerry Clisham

Modern boilers gain 5 to 10% increases in efficiency versus their traditional “on-off” counterparts by being able to adjust their output to meet the demand.  “On-off” boilers are either on at full-fire or they are off.  Modulating boilers can operate at anywhere from 20% of 100% of their full fire capacity.  (For more on boiler modulation please read my previous posts by clicking here.)

By operating at lower fire, the boilers gain efficiency and cycle less.  To maximize this performance, and minimize boiler cycling, which is a drag on efficiency, the boiler must be properly sized.  In the past, it was common for boilers to be sized up to 50% greater than their “coldest day” demand.  This further increased boiler cycling.

Prestige Condensing BoilerWhen replacing an old boiler or installing a new one, it is worth the time to perform a proper heating load analysis.  This will help avoid paying for a boiler that is bigger than needed, or installing a boiler that cannot meet your heating needs.  If a larger boiler is installed than needed you will overspend not only on the initial cost of the boiler, but also by extra fuel cost due to the less efficient operation due to boiler cycling.  While a modulating boiler will operate longer and cycle less than an “on-off” boiler, it still will cycle when the load is lower than the minimum output of the boiler.  Therefore, an oversized boiler should be avoided.

While it may seem logical to simply size your replacement boiler based on the one that is being replaced, a heating load analysis can better determine the size required.  Even if the original boiler had been properly sized when it was installed, there probably have been significant improvements to the house since then.  It is very common for extra insulation and more energy efficient doors and windows to have been installed.  All of these will impact the heating load.

Triangle Tube’s Prestige and Challenger boilers are able to modulate down to between 25% and 30% of the boiler’s maximum output.   This helps improve efficiency especially during the warmer days in the heating season.  This modulation is also helpful when using an indirect water heater like Triangle Tube’s Smart series.  Make your radiant heating system as green as possible by properly sizing your boiler.  Contact Triangle Tube today for more information of click here to locate a certified installer near you.

Indirect Water Heater stores 40 gallons of Hot Water for $0.05 per day

Monday, January 24, 2011 by Gerry Clisham
Being green means doing what's best for the environment, and in some cases it requires some sacrifice.  But if you install a Smart Indirect Water Heater from Triangle Tube, there are big benefits for both you and the environment.

Hydronic heating is the most energy efficient and comfortable way to heat your home.  Hydronic heating uses a boiler like the Prestige modulating boiler to heat hot water that passes through baseboard, in-floor, or traditional radiators.  One of the other benefits of a hydronic heating system is the ability to use an indirect water heater, which is more energy efficient, more reliable, and more productive than traditional gas or electric water heaters.

One of the benefits of the Smart Indirect Water Heater is that it is completely surrounded by  insulation, unlike traditional gas water heaters that have an uninsulated and drafty flue pipe through their center.  By using 2 inches of foam insulation a Smart indirect water heater is so well insulated that the standby heat loss is only $0.05 per day !
Smart Indirect Water Heaters
A nickel a day is a small price to keep 40 gallons of hot water ready for use (based on natural gas at $1.25/therm).  Many people are considering installing instantaneous water heaters to avoid paying for standby heat loss.  But in their quest to be green, they are having to wait for the hot water to respond, and also are limited in the amount of water they can withdraw at one time.  In addition, the installation and maintenance costs may outweigh any cost savings possible.

In contrast, the Smart water heaters provide instant hot water response to as many demands as needed until the tank is depleted.  But even then, the unique design of the Smart tank reheats water at an industry leading pace.  Designed to eliminate energy robbing limescale, the Smart keeps performing efficiently throughout its life - which is a long one that is guaranteed by a limited lifetime warranty.

Take full advantage of your hydronic heating system and make a comparison between the Smart tank and any other tank type or instantaneous water heater.  When you add up all of the benefits to a Smart Indirect Water Heater, you will see that selecting it truly is the Smart choice.

Outdoor Reset - One of the Keys to Energy Efficiency

Thursday, January 20, 2011 by Gerry Clisham
Outdoor reset works hand-in-hand with modern modulating, condensing boilers to drive significant gains in energy efficiency.  The principle is simple to understand, and easy to implement.  The basic principle is that a hydronic heating system should operate at higher temperatures when it is colder outside.  This allows the system to transfer more heat to the building and keep up with the increased heat loss due to the colder weather.  The simple formula is Lower outdoor temperatures = Higher heat loss from the building = Higher hydronic temperatures to transfer more heat to the building.

The great thing about Outdoor Reset is that it is easy to implement.  A small outdoor temperature sensor is placed on the exterior of the building and wired to the boiler control.  Today's modern green boilers use advanced controls that can read the outdoor temperature and adjust the temperature of the boiler system water by using an outdoor reset curve that is set by the installer.

Outdoor Reset maximizes the effectiveness of a modulating boiler.  Modulating boilers have variable outputs rather than traditional on-off boilers which do not have adjustable fire rates.  you can think of Modulation as the adjustment knob on your stove.  Modulation allows the boiler to run between "warm" and "high fire".  You can see more about modulation in the "Modulating Boiler" blog page.    By modulating the firing rate down, the boiler is able to run longer and actually runs more efficiently at lower firing rates.

Triangle Tube's Prestige Modulating Condensing BoilerOutdoor reset will increase the efficiency of most residential and commercial radiant heating systems.  It will increase the efficiency of most boilers including gas boilers such as Triangle Tube's Prestige or Challenger boilers, as well as modern electric boilers such as Triangle Tube's Century boiler.  If you are not currently using outdoor reset, call your contractor today to see if it start saving you money today.
