Prestige Condensing Boilers Cut Office Fuel Bills 58%

Thursday, March 1, 2012 by Gerry Clisham

O&G Industries, a global construction materials and services company purchased and converted a Torrington, CT post office building into office space.  As part of the conversion, O&G wisely decided to remove a 40 year old, 1 million Btu/hr oil fired boiler.  They called in Stafford Mechanical Services to perform the conversion.

Stafford Mechanical Services focuses on designing and installing energy saving projects. After performing a comprehensive energy audit, they determined that natural gas boilers would provide superior energy cost savings compared to oil fired boilers.  Triangle Tube’s 95% efficient Prestige boilers were the best replacements for the old boiler.  Gary Reviczky, of Stafford Mechanical Services noted, “I selected the Triangle Tube Prestige boilers based on my experience with them.  They have proven to be both easy to install and highly reliable.”

Two Prestige Solo 399 boilers, with a total input of nearly 800,000 Btu/hr. replaced the old 1 million Btu/hr. cast iron boiler.  A Triangle Tube Mini-Mod Control provides for the outdoor reset feature to modulate the system water temperature, while the full parallel modulation maximizes the system’s efficiency by operating the boilers at the minimum possible firing rate.  The Triangle Tube boilers increased the heating system turndown to nearly 8 to 1, which minimized boiler cycling and optimized the efficiency.

Prestige BoilerThe Prestige boilers were vented using PVC piping in the existing 30 foot chimney.   This prevented the need for additional holes in the wall and visible vent piping on the exterior.  The wall mounted Prestige boilers freed up the floor space in the boiler room and allowed the piping to be neatly organized.

The old boiler consumed 4,850 gallons during a normal heating season.  At a price of $3.60 per gallon of heating oil, this would cost $17,460.  During the 2010-11 heating season, O&G’s heating cost with the Triangle Tube system was just $7404.  This is a 58% reduction.  The 2010-11 heating season was one of the colder ones in recent memory, so further savings are expected in the future.

Stafford Mechanical Services selected Triangle Tube Prestige boilers helped to convert an old post office to an energy efficient office building.  The building’s owners, O&G Industries will have a more energy efficient workplace for many years to come.

Condensing Boilers make Hot Water Too

Monday, September 12, 2011 by Gerry Clisham
I had the opportunity to speak with a homeowner recently who was looking for a contractor to service her boiler.  Unfortunately the firm that she had used to install her boiler not only did a poor job in the installation, but also installed more equipment than she needs.  This brings to mind two important points.

First, the vast majority of problems that homeowners encounter with their hydronic heating systems could have been avoided with proper system design.  This is why hiring a highly qualified contractor is so important.  A good contractor will foresee any system design issues and save you money in the long run.  Triangle Tube's Certified Contractor Locator (click here) will email you a list of up to 5 contractors in your area that can meet your needs.

Smart Indirect Water HeaterSecond, one of the big advantages of hydronic heating systems is the ability for your boiler to heat your domestic hot water as well.  Take advantage of this by installing a Smart Indirect Water Heater to go with your boiler.  Many homeowners are interested in energy efficiency and are interested in an instantaneous water heater.  However the Smart Indirect Water Heater is extremely energy efficient and costs only $0.05 per day to keep 40 gallons of hot water ready for use.  Unfortunately this homeowner, interested in doing what she thought (and was told) was best purchased an instantaneous water heater in addition to her boiler.  She could not get the performance she wanted from the instantaneous water heater and was considering a hybrid water heater.  As I explained the value of the Smart Indirect Heater, that would be more energy efficient and cost half as much to install as the hybrid water heater, I realized how important it is to get good advice.

The four keys to Boiler Replacement

Monday, July 25, 2011 by Gerry Clisham

There are four keys to successfully replacing your boiler.  By following these keys, you will ensure a fast trouble-free installation and much lower utility bills.  Prestige Boiler

1)  Selecting the right product - Craftsmen will tell you that building a fine piece of furniture starts with selecting the right wood.  The same is true in boiler replacement.  By selecting a reliable, highly efficient boiler, you will ensure that the project will be a success if the three other keys are followed.  Choosing a poorly designed product will ensure long term dissatisfaction, even if the other keys are correct.  Triangle Tube's Prestige and Challenger boilers are industry leaders in reliability and efficiency.  For more information on this, see the end of this post.

2)  Select the right contractor - Once again, a good contractor will make or break the project.  There is much more involved in replacing a boiler than simply removing the old boiler and inserting a new one.  The boiler must be sized and the piping layout reviewed to ensure that the heating system works in harmony.  A good contractor will have experience and proper training to know how to join all of the parts of the heating system into an efficient, effective, heating machine.  Click here to find certified Triangle Tube contractors in your area.

3)  Size the boiler properly - A lot has changed in your home since the last boiler was installed.  Perhaps you have new windows and/or doors.  Perhaps radiant floor heating was installed.  An addition may have been added, the attic has been insulated.  A proper heat loss analysis must be performed to select the proper boiler for the house.  An boiler that is too large will cause excessive cycling and drive up energy costs.  One that is too small will not keep the house warm on the coldest days.

4)  Use outdoor reset - One of the biggest efficiency gains in new boilers is the ability to use computer technology to adjust the hydronic system to the heating load.  As the weather gets warmer, less heat is required.  By lowering the system temperature, the house is able to be heated much more efficiently.  Please make sure this important feature is being used.  For more information on outdoor reset, click here.

Challenger Boiler
Triangle Tube's Prestige and Challenger boilers are modern, highly efficient, natural gas or propane boilers that have excellent track records in reliability.  With AFUEs of 95% or higher, and low NOx emissions, these are responsible, green choices for both the environment and your budget.  When paired with a Smart Indirect Fired Water Heater, they form the right solution for your residential heat and hot water needs.

Triangle Tube is proud to announce the availability of the new Challenger Combination Boiler.  This boiler joins the industry leading Prestige boiler and the Prestige Excellence to provide a powerful lineup to meet residential and commercial hydronic heating and hot water needs.
Challenger Combination Boiler
The Challenger features a unique copper and aluminum heat exchanger that heats both the space heating system water and the domestic hot water within the one heat exchanger.  The copper waterways are overmolded with aluminum to provide an efficient heat exchanger, eliminating hot spots and maximizing the condensing efficiency.  The Challenger is the only Combination Boiler that is certified as both a boiler and a heat exchanger.  In addition the Challenger is unique because it condenses in both space heating and domestic hot water modes.  The Challenger is available wPrestige High Efficiency Condensing Boilerith inputs of 84, 106, and 124 MBH.

Triangle Tube's industry leading Prestige condensing boiler features a stainless steel fire tube heat exchanger that provides an industry-low pressure drop.  This minimizes pump electric consumption and allows the Prestige to be used in reverse-return installations.  The Prestige is available with inputs from 60 to 399 MBH.  The Prestige 110 MBH size is pre-piped for use with an indirect fired water heater such as Triangle Tube's Smart models.
Prestige Excellence Boiler & Water Heater
The Prestige Excellence is a truly unique boiler and water heater combination.  Unlike a Combi boiler such as the Challenger that will provide domestic hot water on demand, the Prestige Excellence includes an integrated tank-in-tank water heater with 14 gallons of stored domestic hot water.  This provides the instant hot water response that homeowners have come to expect from a typical hot water storage tank, along with the compact size and energy efficiency of a combi boiler or instantaneous water heater.

The Challenger, Prestige, and Prestige Excellence are efficiency leaders with AFUEs of 95% and above.  All models use natural gas or propane and feature green emissions that meet California's SCAQMD requirements for Low NOx emissions.  All models use modern controls, outdoor reset, and modulation to maximize efficiency.

Triangle Tube's Challenger, Prestige, and Prestige Excellence boilers provide a wide selection of solutions to today's needs for high efficiency boilers.

Water Heater Comparisons: Indirect Water Heaters and Instantaneous Water Heaters

Thursday, April 28, 2011 by Gerry Clisham
In the previous post (click here for this post) we discussed the characteristics of traditional gas and electric of water heaters.  These are the most common types of water heaters, however they are also the least efficient model.  These also have the shortest expected lifespan.  In this post we will discuss Instantaneous Water Heaters and Indirect Water Heaters.
Instantaneous Water Heater

Instantaneous Water Heaters
Instantaneous Water Heaters are a relatively new product in the market.  These water heaters heat domestic hot water only on demand, eliminating the storage tank and stored water volume.  Eliminating the storage tank also eliminates the standby heat loss from the stored water.  This energy efficiency has created interest as the energy costs have risen over the last few years.  While most people measure traditional water heaters by their storage volume (somewhat incorrectly), instantaneous water heaters are measured by their maximum flow rates.  These flow rates are important as they will determine how much water can be used at one time.  Instantaneous water heaters are promoted by saying that you will never run out of hot water, which is meant to deal with the fact that traditional water heaters, with their slow recovery rates, will run out of hot water.  Instantaneous water heaters will continue to produce hot water as long as requested, but you can get cold water from the shower if you use too much at one time.  Instantaneous water heaters have an estimated life of 15 to 20 years - however regular maintenance is required.  Scale will accumulate on the heat exchanger that must be removed periodically.

Indirect Water Heaters
Smart Indirect Fired Water HeaterIndirect Water Heaters are a perfect option for homes with existing boilers.  Because they utilize the boiler as their heat source, they have the simplest configuration.  Boiler system water is used to heat the domestic water.  Most indirect water heaters pump the boiler system water through a coil in the domestic hot water storage tank.  The heat is then transferred from the coil to the domestic water.  The Smart Indirect Water Heater uses a unique tank-in-tank design that surrounds the entire domestic water tank with hot boiler system water.  This results in a very high heat transfer rate and therefore a very fast recovery rate.  Therefore a 40 gallon Smart water heater will supply more hot water than a 40 gallon traditional gas water heater.  In fact the recovery rate of the Smart is twice as fast as a traditional gas water heater and four times as fast as an electric water heater.

When combined with a high efficiency boiler such as Triangle Tube's Prestige Solo boiler, indirect water heaters are very energy efficient.  They do not have the flue or chimney that is in a traditional gas boiler therefore their standby losses can be minimized   Triangle Tube's Smart Indirect Water Heater is surrounded by 2 inches of expanded foam, and minimizes the heat loss to 1/2 degree F per hour.  This translate to a cost of $0.05 per day to maintain 40 gallons at temperature with natural gas.

Coil-in-tank indirect water heaters will accumulate scale on the hot coils in the tank.  As this scale accumulates the efficiency of the tank decreases and the recovery rate gets longer.  The Smart Indirect Water Heater surrounds the domestic tank with hot boiler water, minimizing scale formation.  As fresh cold domestic water enters the tank, the inner tank is designed to expand and contract, dislodging any scale.  Therefore the tank will retain its high efficiency throughout its life.  And speaking of life, the Smart Indirect Water Heater comes with a limited Lifetime Warranty for residential installations.  So the Smart Indirect Water Heater will be the last water heater you ever buy.

Conclusion
Indirect Water Heaters are among the most efficient ways to produce domestic hot water.  It is important when considering any water heater that you look not only at the storage tank volume, but more importantly in how much water the tank can deliver.  Due to the unique tank-in-tank design, the Smart Indirect Water Heater is among the most reliable, most efficient, and most desirable water heaters you can select.

Outdoor Reset Maximizes Spring Energy Savings

Friday, April 8, 2011 by Gerry Clisham
2010 was another record year for high efficiency boiler sales.  If you have made this investment, now is the time to make sure that it is operating at peak efficiency.  One of the key features of hgh efficiency boilers is the Outdoor Reset feature.

Outdoor reset simply matches the boiler system temperature with the outdoor temperature.  In a boiler system, the hotter the water supplied by the boiler, the more heat that the radiant heaters can supply to the home.  However, boiler system efficiency decreases as the water supply temperature increases.  Therefore, to maximize the system efficiency, you want the boiler to supply water at the lowest possible temperature.

Outdoor reset allows the boiler to maintain a lower supply temperature as the outdoor Boiler Efficiency Graphtemperature increases.  This increases the boiler's efficiency while still maintaining the warmth in the home.

Modern high efficiency boilers, such as Triangle Tube's Prestige or Challenger boilers use outdoor reset to maximize their efficiency.  These boilers are supplied with an outdoor temperature sensor that can be easily installed on an exterior wall.  This sensor is then connected to the boiler controller.  The boiler is then programmed to vary the boiler supply temperature with the outside temperature.

Challenger Combination BoilerSpring is the season where outdoor reset really pays off.  As the temperature outside rises, you can rest assured that your Prestige or Challenger boiler is running more efficiently than ever.

Heating Oil Price jump makes High Efficiency Boilers even more attractive

Thursday, March 31, 2011 by Gerry Clisham
2011 has started out as a good year for heating oil prices - if you have your own well !  ButHeating Oil Futures are up 50% if you are relying on it for heat and hot water, you may have another opinion.  The attached chart from the US Energy Information Administration documents the 50% increase in heating oil futures in 2011.  While you may have locked in your oil rates for the heating season, now is the time to consider your alternatives for your heating system this fall.

There are many advantages to the natural gas boilers and indirect water heaters from Triangle Tube.  Because natural gas burns cleaner than fuel oil, it is not only good for the environment with its low NOx emissions, but it also greatly reduces the ongoing service costs.  And homegrown natural gas is abundant in North America, giving it much better price stability.
Challenger Combination Boiler
Prestige BoilerTriangle Tube's Prestige and Challenger condensing boilers achieve AFUE ratings of 95% or greater, putting them at the top of the market.  The boilers use modulation to further improve their efficiency compared to older boilers (click here to read more about modulation).  This is especially helpful in the spring and fall (the majority of the heating season) as it allows the boiler to run longer at lower firing rates, increasing efficiency.

The SMART indirect water heaters team up with the Prestige to provide plentiful hot water at a maximum efficiency.  The unique stainless steel tank-in-tank design quickly heats the water while the 2 inch foam insulation reduces standby heat loss to a nickle a day.  Instantaneous water heaters can't match the lifetime warranty on the Smart water heaters, making them the Smart choice for your home and wallet.

Prepare for the fall heating season now.  Eliminate the volatility of the heating oil market with a new natural gas boiler.  Contact Triangle Tube today for more information.

Green Boiler and Water Heater cuts Pennsylvania Church fuel bills

F.W. Behler Installs Triangle Tube Boilers and ControlsDave Yates of F.W. Behler is a contractor that is determined to provide his customers with the highest efficiency and most reliable hydronic heating solutions.  His latest project at St. Paul's Church in Dallastown, Pa is a terrific example of how the latest energy efficient products can both improve the comfort level in the church while minimizing its natural gas and electricity costs.

Prestige Boilers and Smart Indirect Water Heaters in St. Paul's ChurchDave chose to use two Triangle Tube Prestige Condensing, Modulating, stainless steel boilers to handle the heating requirements.  He selected Triangle Tube's Smart Indirect Fired Water Heaters to work with the Prestige boilers for the hot water needs.  Both of the Prestige and the Smart have a minimal pressure drop, which equates to a minimal pump power consumption, another area of energy savings.  The low pressure drop through the Prestige boiler also eliminated the need for a primary circulator, which adds further to the electrical energy savings.

Triangle Tube Optima Control ProgrammingThe parishioners were also pleased with the low maintenance, stainless steel heat exchanger in the Prestige.  This minimizes the annual cost of the hydronic heating system.  By combining the Prestige with new flat panel radiators maximizes the condensing efficiency of the system and provides comfortable radiant warmth.

Challenger Boiler Saves Installation Time and Money !

Thursday, February 24, 2011 by Gerry Clisham
Triangle Tube's Challenger Combination Boiler has been designed to be efficient in all aspects.  It is easy to admire the 96% AFUE fuel efficiency as well as the compact size and attractive appearance of the Challenger.  In addition the Challenger produces instantaneous hot water efficiently thanks to its unique heat exchanger, resulting in an energy factor rating of 0.87.

But what often is overlooked is the efficiency with which it can be installed and programmed.  Because the Challenger eliminates the need for a separate hot water tank, it eliminates all of the time and piping required to install the tank (in addition to the cost of the tank itself).

Challenger Combination BoilerThe Challenger has several additional features that make it easy to install.  First, thanks to the simplicity of the design, it is lightweight with a weight of only 80 pounds for a 125 MBH appliance.  This makes it easy to lift and hang on the wall.  Second, each Challenger comes complete with an simple piping bracket that quickly, neatly, and securely provides connections for either the fuel (either natural gas or propane), space heating, and domestic hot water piping.  Third, each Challenger can be vented either concentrically or with two pipes.  This provides the flexibility to select the optimum venting for your installation.  Finally, the optional Timesaver manifold eliminates the guesswork as well as the time in designing and creating the pump and primary secondary connections.  Simply connect the Timesaver to the system piping, add in the pump, and the boiler is connected.

Making the Challenger easy to install benefits everyone.  The homeowner sees a lower installed cost and the installer can move on to another job.  And everyone benefits by the confidence that the boiler was installed properly !  Look for more information on Triangle Tube's website in March 2011 !

Is your modulating boiler properly sized?

Monday, January 31, 2011 by Gerry Clisham

Modern boilers gain 5 to 10% increases in efficiency versus their traditional “on-off” counterparts by being able to adjust their output to meet the demand.  “On-off” boilers are either on at full-fire or they are off.  Modulating boilers can operate at anywhere from 20% of 100% of their full fire capacity.  (For more on boiler modulation please read my previous posts by clicking here.)

By operating at lower fire, the boilers gain efficiency and cycle less.  To maximize this performance, and minimize boiler cycling, which is a drag on efficiency, the boiler must be properly sized.  In the past, it was common for boilers to be sized up to 50% greater than their “coldest day” demand.  This further increased boiler cycling.

Prestige Condensing BoilerWhen replacing an old boiler or installing a new one, it is worth the time to perform a proper heating load analysis.  This will help avoid paying for a boiler that is bigger than needed, or installing a boiler that cannot meet your heating needs.  If a larger boiler is installed than needed you will overspend not only on the initial cost of the boiler, but also by extra fuel cost due to the less efficient operation due to boiler cycling.  While a modulating boiler will operate longer and cycle less than an “on-off” boiler, it still will cycle when the load is lower than the minimum output of the boiler.  Therefore, an oversized boiler should be avoided.

While it may seem logical to simply size your replacement boiler based on the one that is being replaced, a heating load analysis can better determine the size required.  Even if the original boiler had been properly sized when it was installed, there probably have been significant improvements to the house since then.  It is very common for extra insulation and more energy efficient doors and windows to have been installed.  All of these will impact the heating load.

Triangle Tube’s Prestige and Challenger boilers are able to modulate down to between 25% and 30% of the boiler’s maximum output.   This helps improve efficiency especially during the warmer days in the heating season.  This modulation is also helpful when using an indirect water heater like Triangle Tube’s Smart series.  Make your radiant heating system as green as possible by properly sizing your boiler.  Contact Triangle Tube today for more information of click here to locate a certified installer near you.

Radiant Floor Heating - Warm from the Ground Up

Tuesday, January 25, 2011 by Gerry Clisham

It is safe to say that most people do not give much consideration to the type of heating system when they are considering a house purchase.  But people who have experienced the benefits of radiant floor heating are certain to have this on their list.

Radiant floor heating's growth is one of the most positive trends in the HVAC industry in recent years.  These systems have the unique feature of being energy efficient, comfortable, invisible, and silent.  In nearly every aspect they are a clear winner.

Radiant Floor InstallationRadiant floor heating systems are a modern alternative to the traditional cast iron radiators or the more recent hot water baseboard systems.  In a radiant floor system water (or glycol in some cases) is heated by a boiler and circulated through tubing that is installed under the floor.  This water warms the flooring and the heat then radiates throughout the home.

There are many benefits to this process.  First, it is extremely energy efficient as the warmest part of the room is the floor, which is the part of the room people use.  A hot air furnace heats the air which enters the room through registers on the floor, but then quickly rises to the ceiling, making it the warmest part of the room.  In comparison, a room heated by radiant flooring can be kept at a lower overall temperature yet feel warmer than a room heated by hot air.

Second, the system is invisible and silent.  The tubing is under the floor and out of the way.  There is no sound of air moving through ducts.  Third the system contributes to a healthy home by minimizing dust and keeping the room at a more comfortable humidity level.  Fourth, the system is multi-functional.  A well designed hydronic heating system can heat your home, hot water, swimming pool, and even melt the snow on your driveway or walkway.

Triangle Tube is an industry leading provider of hydronic heating equipment.  The Prestige boilers lead the market with a high efficiency, reliable heat exchanger and use either natural gas or propane.  The Smart indirect water heaters heat water twice as fast as a traditional gas fired water heater and feature a unique stainless steel tank-in-tank design backed by a limited lifetime warranty.  Maxi Flo pool and spa heat exchangers enable you to use your high efficiency boiler to extend your swimming season.

Consider upgrading your home with Radiant Floor Heating.  There's no need to move to install radiant floor heating.  A certified contractor can replace your hot air system with a radiant system in many cases without disturbing the existing flooring.  Contact Triangle Tube to find a certified contractor in your area today.

Indirect Water Heater stores 40 gallons of Hot Water for $0.05 per day

Monday, January 24, 2011 by Gerry Clisham
Being green means doing what's best for the environment, and in some cases it requires some sacrifice.  But if you install a Smart Indirect Water Heater from Triangle Tube, there are big benefits for both you and the environment.

Hydronic heating is the most energy efficient and comfortable way to heat your home.  Hydronic heating uses a boiler like the Prestige modulating boiler to heat hot water that passes through baseboard, in-floor, or traditional radiators.  One of the other benefits of a hydronic heating system is the ability to use an indirect water heater, which is more energy efficient, more reliable, and more productive than traditional gas or electric water heaters.

One of the benefits of the Smart Indirect Water Heater is that it is completely surrounded by  insulation, unlike traditional gas water heaters that have an uninsulated and drafty flue pipe through their center.  By using 2 inches of foam insulation a Smart indirect water heater is so well insulated that the standby heat loss is only $0.05 per day !
Smart Indirect Water Heaters
A nickel a day is a small price to keep 40 gallons of hot water ready for use (based on natural gas at $1.25/therm).  Many people are considering installing instantaneous water heaters to avoid paying for standby heat loss.  But in their quest to be green, they are having to wait for the hot water to respond, and also are limited in the amount of water they can withdraw at one time.  In addition, the installation and maintenance costs may outweigh any cost savings possible.

In contrast, the Smart water heaters provide instant hot water response to as many demands as needed until the tank is depleted.  But even then, the unique design of the Smart tank reheats water at an industry leading pace.  Designed to eliminate energy robbing limescale, the Smart keeps performing efficiently throughout its life - which is a long one that is guaranteed by a limited lifetime warranty.

Take full advantage of your hydronic heating system and make a comparison between the Smart tank and any other tank type or instantaneous water heater.  When you add up all of the benefits to a Smart Indirect Water Heater, you will see that selecting it truly is the Smart choice.

Outdoor Reset - One of the Keys to Energy Efficiency

Thursday, January 20, 2011 by Gerry Clisham
Outdoor reset works hand-in-hand with modern modulating, condensing boilers to drive significant gains in energy efficiency.  The principle is simple to understand, and easy to implement.  The basic principle is that a hydronic heating system should operate at higher temperatures when it is colder outside.  This allows the system to transfer more heat to the building and keep up with the increased heat loss due to the colder weather.  The simple formula is Lower outdoor temperatures = Higher heat loss from the building = Higher hydronic temperatures to transfer more heat to the building.

The great thing about Outdoor Reset is that it is easy to implement.  A small outdoor temperature sensor is placed on the exterior of the building and wired to the boiler control.  Today's modern green boilers use advanced controls that can read the outdoor temperature and adjust the temperature of the boiler system water by using an outdoor reset curve that is set by the installer.

Outdoor Reset maximizes the effectiveness of a modulating boiler.  Modulating boilers have variable outputs rather than traditional on-off boilers which do not have adjustable fire rates.  you can think of Modulation as the adjustment knob on your stove.  Modulation allows the boiler to run between "warm" and "high fire".  You can see more about modulation in the "Modulating Boiler" blog page.    By modulating the firing rate down, the boiler is able to run longer and actually runs more efficiently at lower firing rates.

Triangle Tube's Prestige Modulating Condensing BoilerOutdoor reset will increase the efficiency of most residential and commercial radiant heating systems.  It will increase the efficiency of most boilers including gas boilers such as Triangle Tube's Prestige or Challenger boilers, as well as modern electric boilers such as Triangle Tube's Century boiler.  If you are not currently using outdoor reset, call your contractor today to see if it start saving you money today.

Solar Water Heater Tax Credits Remain at 30% for 2011

Thursday, January 6, 2011 by Gerry Clisham
While many of the energy efficiency tax credits were reduced at the end of 2010, it is good to know that the tax credits for the installation of a Solar Thermal System remain at 30% for 2011.  The tax credit covers the costs for the equipment and installation labor for the full system.

Solar Thermal systems provide one of the quickest paybacks in the renewable energy market.  In a solar thermal system, liquid, usually glycol, is pumped through tubes in panels that are usually installed on a rooftop.  The solar panels absorb the sun's energy and transfer it to the liquid, which then transfers the heat energy to a storage tank.

Smart SME Indirect Water HeatersThe most common usage for solar thermal systems is to heat domestic hot water.  For households with hydronic heating, Triangle Tube's Smart Multi Energy (SME) Indirect Water Heaters are an excellent way to do this.  The heat energy from the solar panels is transfered to the boiler system water as the glycol passes through a coil in the outer tank of the water heater.  This heat is then transferred to the domestic hot water.

The Smart SME water heater's high water content provides the potential to store a large amount of thermal energy during peak heating hours.  The SME is designed with 10 ports that can connect to other heat sources such as ground source heat pumps or oil, gas, or propane boilers.  In addition, when the SME is connected to a radiant heating system, the solar panels will provide space heating.

Contact Triangle Tube to learn more about how the Smart Multi Energy water heater can become a key part in your solar thermal system.  Take advantage of the 30% federal tax incentive and save some money while going green.

Natural Gas Boiler Upgrade Saves St. John Church nearly 50%

Tuesday, January 4, 2011 by Gerry Clisham

Triangle Tube's Prestige boilers are used extensively in residential installations.  But the benefits of upgrading to a modern, fuel efficient boiler are not limited to homeowners.  Significant opportunities for energy savings exist in light commercial buildings such as churches, schools, offices, and apartments.

St. John Church and SchoolSt. John Church and School in Aurora Indiana had the opportunity to replace its 50 plus year old boiler and chose the energy efficient combination of Triangle Tube's Prestige Solo 399 boilers and a Smart 40 water heater.  The church and school was able to use most of their existing piping even as the new wall-mounted Prestige boilers freed up significant floor space in the boiler room.

The radiant heating system was designed to maximize the condensing efficiency of the Prestige boilers.  One new Smart indirect fired water heater replaced two electric water Prestige Boilerheaters, improving efficiency and reliability.

Through the replacement of the boiler the church was able to save over $6500 in heating costs.  And they are not finished yet.  Paul Kuhlmeier, the heating specialist at St. John plans to replace the existing thermostats with more advanced programable versions for further savings.  Larry Dillard, of Dillard Electric Heating and Cooling, is so satisfied with the performance of the Triangle Tube system, that he plans to install several more over the next year.  Pat Linhardt of the Habegger Corporation provided product and system design assistance

Radiant Heating Renovation

Tuesday, December 28, 2010 by Gerry Clisham

In-floor radiant heating systems have become very popular over the last decade.  This relatively new trend is not limited to new construction.  In fact, many existing heating systems can be rather easily replaced by a new radiant system.  In-floor heating can be installed in existing homes where there is access to the sub-floor from the floor below, usually the basement.

There is no limit to the potential installations with some creativity and commitment.  Such is the case in this 18th century farmhouse renovation by F.W. Behler.  The team took on the task of installing in-floor radiant in a stone farmhouse with original wide plank wood floors and hand-hewn beams.

Prestige BoilerThe F.W. Behler team designed and installed a hydronic heating system that was energy efficient in all aspects.  The heart of the system is a Triangle Tube Prestige propane boiler, with an AFUE of 95%.  They combined this with Triangle Tube's SMART 40 indirect water heater, with less than $0.10 per day in standby heat loss.  Finally, they took advantage of the very low pressure drop of the Prestige boiler and installed extremely energy efficient ECM circulators.  This system design is expected to reduce the electric costs by nearly $5000 over the life of the system.

High Efficiency Boiler Basics - The Benefits of Modulation

Friday, December 3, 2010 by Gerry Clisham
There have been significant gains in the energy efficiency of hydronic heating systems in the last decade.  Many of these gains have been made possible by the use of microprocessors to better control the boiler's function.  Modulation is one of the functions that modern boiler controls have made possible that is driving energy efficiency gains.

Modulation is the term used to describe the ability of a boiler to fire at varying rates.  If you think of a gas stove, modulation is your ability to control the burner's heat output - anywhere from "warm" to "full boil".

Traditional boilers do not have the ability to modulate.  They are either at "full boil" or they are off.  Now, think how efficient it would be to cook your dinner with this type of control.  You would be constantly turning the stove on and off, trying to maintain the right temperature.  If you consider that boilers are inefficient during the start-up periods and are actually least efficient at "full boil" otherwise known as "high-fire", you will quickly realize that this is not the best way to run a boiler.

Modern controls such as those in Prestige boilers, use a variety of sensors to monitor the boiler system and adjust (modulate) the output of the boiler to meet the heating needs of the home.  This modulation allows the boiler to run longer (fewer on and off cycles) at lower fire rates (for improved efficiency) while still maintaining the desired temperature in the Prestige Excellencehome.  Modulation is effective in residential radiant heating applications.   This is especially true in modern radiant floor heating, where the system temperatures are lower.

Triangle Tube's Prestige Solo boilers utilize modern features such as modulation, outdoor reset, low NOx burners, and a unique stainless steel heat exchanger to deliver outstanding efficiency with an AFUE rating of 95%.  The Prestige Excellence combination boiler provides both heat and up to 180 gallons per hour of hot water from within the boiler, eliminating the need for a seperate domestic hot water tank.

Smart Water HeaterIf a seperate hot water heater is desired, Triangle Tube's Smart Indirect Water Heaters are the perfect companion to the Prestige Solo.  With a unique stainless steel tank-in-tank design, the Smart indirect water heaters heat water quickly, with standby heat loss costs as little as $0.05 per day.  With a limited LIFETIME residential warranty, the Smart indirect water heaters are a sound investment.

How limescale ruins common water heaters

Monday, November 29, 2010 by Gerry Clisham
The most common cause of failure in traditional gas and electric water heaters is limescale build-up.  During normal operation, especially in hard water areas, minerals in water will accumulate on the hottest parts of the water heater.  In electric water heaters this would be the heating coil, and in traditional gas water heaters this would be the tank area near the burner.

Over time this build-up acts as an insulator, causing the water heater to work harder and harder to heat the water.  This reduces the energy efficiency of the water heater by up to 50%.  The water heater will eventually fail due to this excessive heat.  Coil-type indirect fired water heaters provide a longer service life, however limescale does accumulate on their coils decreasing efficiency and eventually leading to failure.
Smart Indirect Fired Water Heater
In comparison, Triangle Tube's Smart Indirect Fired Water Heaters practically eliminate limescale build-up and failure due to the unique tank-in-tank design.  In the Smart water heater design, a stainless steel inner tank containing the domestic hot water is  surrounded by boiler system water in an outer tank.  The boiler system water heats the entire surface of the inner tank, eliminating areas of heat concentration.  In addition, the stainless steel inner tank is allowed to expand and contract slightly as cold water enters the tank.  This movement dislodges any limescale that does accumulate and allows it to pass through the system.

The Smart indirect fired water heater is available for use with traditional boiler systems while the is designed to work as an integral part of a green solar water heater system.  Triangle Tube's Smart indirect water heaters can be paired with the Prestige boiler for optimum system efficiency.

Smart Indirect Water Heaters – The Efficiency Leaders

Friday, November 19, 2010 by Gerry Clisham

Energy Efficiency is important to everyone these days. Whether you are striving to save money, or are simply looking to minimize your carbon footprint, green products have a bigger following than ever. Heating the hot water consumes up to 25% of the energy use in your home, so it is important to look at your water heater efficiency to minimize your energy consumption.

Many people are considering combination or instantaneous water heaters to reduce their energy costs. Instantaneous water heaters heat hot water directly, eliminating the storage tank, and therefore eliminating the standby heat loss that occurs while the hot water is not used. This is a good solution, especially if your house has only one or at most two showers. If you have a larger family with more extensive hot water needs, a Smart Indirect Fired Water Heater may be more appropriate.

Smart Indirect Fired Waer HeaterTriangle Tube's Smart Indirect Water Heaters work with homes that have an existing boiler. These water heaters use the boiler system to heat the hot water through a unique tank-in-tank system.   The large surface area of the inner tank allows for rapid heat transfer, allowing for a small tank to replace much larger traditional water heaters.

But the most important factors in the Smart’s energy efficiency are its insulating jacket and the boiler efficiency. When a SMART tank is paired with a high efficiency boiler,, like Triangle Tube's Prestige boiler it can heat the water using nearly 25% less energy than a gas water heater. In addition, the Smart tanks are surrounded by 2 inches of foam, which limits heat loss to less than ½ degree F per hour. The result is that standby losses can cost less than $0.05 per day.

With no moving parts, Triangle Tube’s Smart indirect fired water heaters are very reliable. In fact they come with a limited Lifetime residential warranty. The efficiency and reliability of the Smart indirect water heaters make them an excellent choice for today’s green homes.
